Student T-Shirt Design Competition and

Networking Event

        The Next Generation of Architecture

On Thursday, April 18th, 16 students competed in our first annual T-shirt Competition with Florida Atlantic University and the FAU AIAS Chapter. The competition, sponsored by Gresham, Smith and Partners, asked students to design based around the theme of

The Next Generation of Architecture.  The students designs were pinned up in the jury space at FAU and design professionals and students had a chance to mingle, share ideas and tour through the studio.  A jury of six (Deirdre Hardy, AIA, Paul Pannier, AIA, Danilo Guiso, AIA, Arthur Frimet, AIA, Paula Jarrett Nasta, AIA and Wayne Hannaka) reviewed the entries and selected the following winners, listed below with description of their design.

1st Place:  Boutros BouNahra

Boutros' Description:

Considering the theme, "The Next Generation of Architects," the thought that the transition from student to professional is evidently an ongoing cycle. Students will eventually become the future of the profession and in order for a successful transition, a proper education about architecture outside school is imperative. The design portrays a person looking up at the sky surrounded by the architecture of Fort Lauderdale, pondering what lies in the future. The double-meaning of the quote shows the importance of education in and outside of school. "What is Architecture without it's Foundation"

2nd Place: Maria F. Sapatta

Maria's Description:

The design basically involves two main elements clashing together: architecture and technology. Technology allows architecture to evolve and adapt to new times. I decided to represent older technology with gears and newer technology with computer circuits. From these forms there are; consequently, buildings emerging at the top, showing my concept of architecture and technology working together. Finally, I arranged the composition in the form of a heart to transmit that architecture is not only my professional career but also my passion.

3rd Place: Annette Hatchard and Marco Mandra

Description:

Title: "Who is next?" When we were coming up with a design idea we asked ourselves, "What is AIA?". Together we knew we had to create something that would represent the future of Architecture students. Therefore we created a T-shirt design that included some famous architects and attached the phrase "Who is Next?". Our future is to become a great architect and our resource is AIA Fort Lauderdale.

Congratulations to Boutros, Maria, Annette and Marco.  Thank you to all the design professionals who participated in jurying, planning or attending the event.  A t-shirt will be given to all competition entrants at the FAU Architecture Graduation Party, May 1st. e.
