      Committee On The Environment

      Committee  Goals

The Committee on the Environment works to advance, disseminate, and advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment. COTE serves as the community and voice on behalf of AIA architects regarding sustainable design and building science and performance.

John Garra has two decades of experience in the construction industry.  John founded the design-build firm, Square One Architecture, Inc. with the goal of constantly refining his green building skills and has valued innovative design and construction. His firm is well known in South Florida’s green building community particularly for the pioneering LEED certified projects and aiding the USGBC in the development of their LEED rating system. John’s approach is, to design in harmony with surroundings.

As an architect in training (intern architect or whatever the current jargon is), John had early exposure to the American Institute of Architecture through his mentors in Cincinnati and now has been an active member of AIA Ft. Lauderdale since 2005. John initialed the development of the Committee On The Environment and provided its momentum to successfully collaborate with like minded organizations. The AIA has always provided John with a network of like minded people with similar issues and accomplishments, some as old as the profession and others the growing pains of innovation. Is a small business practitioner, my AIA peers have been a valued resource.
